Juliana Onwumere is a neglected tropical disease coordinator in Imo state ministry of health. As Carterand partners fight to eliminate river blindness disease in Nigeria, one of Onwumere’s tasks is to collect black flies to be tested for evidence of the disease.

Carteris one of eight semi-finalists in the MacArthur Foundation competition for a $100 million grant to fund a single proposal that promises real and measurable progress in solving a critical problem of our time. Carterproposes to eliminate river blindness disease from Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and the one most endemic for this debilitating disease.
